Case study:
Verifying the source of electricity and carbon emissions

Alongside signing the 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact, EnergyTag has recently launched an initiative to define and build a market for Granular Certificates that enable consumers to choose the source of their electricity consumption in each hour of the day. The EnergyTag Initiative is an independent, non-profit, industry-led initiative that will help clean energy buyers access, track, and certify 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy.

"By establishing Granular Certificates as a recognised, tradeable instrument we can harness consumer demand for 24/7 carbon free energy to create a price signal that drives investment in the technologies needed to reach a carbon-free grid faster, like renewables and storage. The Carbon Free Energy Compact is playing a critical and central role in driving this consumer demand, so we are totally aligned!"

Toby Ferenczi Founder, EnergyTag

The EnergyTag Initiative is an independent, non-profit, industry-led initiative to define and build a market for Granular Certificates which enable energy users to verify the source of their electricity and carbon emissions in each hour of the day. Since joining the 24/7 Carbon Free Energy Compact, EnergyTag has published the Granular Certificate Scheme Standard which provides the first version of the criteria that those implementing Granular Certificate Schemes need to meet in order to prove, through a third party audit, that they are compliant with the EnergyTag Standard.

Renewable energy tracking using blockchain technology

Blok-Z, one of the early signatories of the 24/7 Carbon-free Energy Compact is a software start-up based in Germany. Blok-Z develops a white-label blockchain platform for energy retailers to offer their customers 24/7 renewable energy tracking and matching services. With Blok-Z, customers of energy retailers can select renewable sources based on location and type, trace the origin of their energy in real time, and have access to automated sustainability tools.

UK suppliers join Granular Energy’s 24/7 matching framework design

OVO and Brook Green Supply are amongst the 15 energy suppliers joining Granular Energy’s 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy matching platform. Granular’s platform enables them to allocate and optimize hourly certificates so end-consumption can be matched with clean energy around the clock. The project will introduce a market for hourly energy certificates, in partnership with power system operators Elexon, National Grid and Energy Systems Catapult. It will also see the world’s first exchange platform for those certificates launched in partnership with the power market operator NordPool.

Launching the 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact

Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), an international organization that works in partnership with the United Nations and leaders in government, the private sector, financial institutions, civil society and philanthropies to drive faster action towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7), launched the 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact during the High-Level Dialogue on Energy in September 2021 with an initial list of founding signatories committed to working toward a carbon-free future for all.

Deploying innovative Carbon-Free Energy software solutions and advisory services

FlexiDAO is a cleantech startup based in Amsterdam and Barcelona. FlexiDAO is one of the early signatories to the 24/7 Carbon-free Energy Compact and helps create software for companies to reach net zero emissions by tracing where their electricity comes from and its true CO2 content.
